Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Consultation:

Why do you suggest booking a discovery call before purchasing a service?

Because we want your investment to be the right fit. Families come to us with very different needs. Some need a full 2- or 3-week support package, while others only need a one-time “Ask Me Anything” call to get unstuck. A short conversation lets us match you with the level of support you actually need, instead of having you guess from a package description.

I don’t believe in letting my child “cry it out.” Can I still sleep train?

Sleep training doesn’t mean leaving your child in their room to cry for hours on end. It’s a much bigger picture that includes addressing all the factors that impact sleep, from setting up an optimal sleep environment to establishing an age-appropriate sleep schedule that aligns with biological rhythms.

But a “no-cry” sleep solution doesn’t exist. It can be frustrating to learn a new skill, and crying is how babies and children communicate frustration. You may have noticed that even when you’re right there in the room with your child trying to get them to sleep, they still cry.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. We offer methods across the full spectrum of parental involvement, so your plan will match your child’s needs and your comfort level.

How do I know what package will work best for my child and family?

We recommend booking a free discovery call with the sleep consultant you are interested in working with, Kara or Elise, and we will talk it through and help determine which service would be the best fit for your family and circumstances.

We already tried sleep training and it didn't work. Can you still help?

Yes. Sleep training often fails because of a mismatch in schedule, environment, or timing, or because parents had no support when things got hard. Those are all fixable. We’ll look at what happened and where it broke down, and build a new plan.

What if I have twins? Do I have to pay double?

This is probably refreshing for you to hear: no you don’t pay more! We use our standard pricing even if you have twins, or even triplets!

How do I know this is going to work?

If you are consistent, follow your sleep plan, and communicate with us daily throughout this process, we are confident that you will see results.

What is the Family Sleep Institute (FSI)?

The Family Sleep Institute, founded in 2011, is the school that pioneered child sleep consulting, and we are both FSI-certified. It’s modeled after a university program with over 250 hours of challenging coursework. We chose FSI because it holds consultants to a high standard and trains them in the science behind children’s sleep, instead of a one-size-fits-all method.

How does your FSI certification shape the way you work with families?

FSI’s curriculum is grounded in sleep science: how sleep cycles work, how the circadian rhythm develops, and how hormones like melatonin and cortisol affect a child’s ability to fall and stay asleep. Because we understand the biology, we can explain why your child is waking at 4 a.m. or fighting bedtime, and we choose strategies that work with their natural biological rhythms. FSI also doesn’t push a single sleep training method, so we can build a plan that fits your family instead of fitting your family to a method. Graduates also have access to continuing education, so our knowledge stays current.

Why does the science of hormones matter for sleep?

Sleep is largely regulated by hormones. Melatonin rises in the evening when it’s dark and signals the body that it’s time to sleep. Light, especially in the hours before bed and during the night, suppresses melatonin release. When a child stays up too long, sleep pressure causes the brain to release the stress hormone cortisol, which is why overtired kids often get a “second wind” and then struggle to sleep. Well-timed schedules, dark and cool rooms, and consistent routines work with these natural biological processes to establish a healthy sleep foundation.

How do I choose a qualified pediatric sleep consultant?

Ask where they were trained, whether they hold a certification, and what factors they consider when building a sleep plan. Find out what type of support you’ll receive during the plan and how they communicate with you. And look for someone who is honest about when a child should see a doctor before starting sleep training. A discovery call is a good chance to ask these questions.
